Ordering from LAST Veldwear

General

LAST Veldwear is not a factory. It is a bespoke, artisanal workshop run by one person.

Each pair is individually made by myself, from cutting the leather, sewing and making the upper, lasting (making the shoe), sole attachment, trimming and finishing.

It takes time, care and attention to detail. The product is not rushed and has all the unique markings of artisanal workmanship. Some stitches will be skew, the edges will not be perfect and there will be a few blemishes. They are truly handmade pair by pair.

As a result every pair is unique and has a character of its own but I do guarantee a high standard of quality and most likely one of the most comfortable pairs of footwear (after wearing in) that you will ever have.

Vegetable tanned leather and wearing in

We utilise genuine vegetable tanned leather to achieve the desired look and attempt to be as “body friendly” as possible. Leather is tanned either by chemical (Chrome tanning) or vegetable tanning (natural ancient methods) and vegetable tanning is vastly healthier for the planet and your body.
This results in a fairly firm leather that needs a little wearing in.

Generally just dampening (sometime wetting thoroughly) the areas that need to conform and wearing them for 15 to 30 minutes will do the job.
They will be a little stiff the first few days but will wear into your shape and walking style rapidly and remain comfortable and serviceable for a long time thereafter.
Should there be any more challenging adaption needs feel free to contact me.

Maintenance

Maintenance is best with a leather oil, Dales, Moore’s or similar. Just clean with a damp cloth and apply a light layer once every so often and they should age beautifully.

Fitting and sizing

I utilise “English sizing” which is the most commonly used sizing in South Africa, if you are between two sizes generally go to the larger if more than 3mm bigger.
There is a measuring guide that follows, please measure both feet as one is almost certainly longer than the other and we must work on the longer of the two.

For sandals please give your width as well as it affects how we make them and obviously want them to fit as best possible.
Sandals measure as shoes (the loner measurement), just know they will come shorter as per the sizing chart measurements (or you will have very huge heels and they won’t walk well at all!)
